PREPARATION

Introduction

Like any photography session, preparation for your headshot session is essential to create your best first impression image. Did you know that Vanessa Van Edwards, who specializes in how humans behave, says people form an opinion of us in 0.7 seconds? And with our fast-paced internet world, this happens a lot. Have you ever wondered what people would think of you when they view your headshot? Having an engaging headshot session with quality coaching/instruction will create images that draw people to you who are looking for someone with skills, expertise, and a pleasant personality.

Ladies

Clothing

Baggy or excessively tight clothing won't bring out your best. So go with something that brings the best out of you.

For in-studio sessions that are an hour or longer, bring four or more of your best-fitting professional tops/dresses. If your session is part of a corporate session, please only wear that one outfit for the shoot. Blouses, shirts, or dresses should be solid or have a non-distracting pattern. Consider bringing one that matches your eye color. Check with your company coordinator on any specific colors to wear.

Bring a few professional jackets if that's a look you want.

Hair

Please take the time to style your hair nicely before your session. Try not to get a haircut within three days of the headshot session. Hair takes time to settle.

Bring everything you use to style your hair, including anything you use to tame flyaways. Trim any nose hairs and any crazy outlier eyebrow hairs, but don't go nuts.

Makeup

Please go light with the makeup! I think natural makeup that emphasizes your natural beauty is best.

Eyeliner can be incredibly distracting in a headshot. I prefer no eyeliner (or a little bit within reason), but I suggest an exceptionally light application if my clients want eyeliner.

Bring lipsticks or lip glosses. Please bring basic makeup and tools to add, remove, and touch up. Try to avoid makeup with an SPF, which causes more shine.

Other

If you wear glasses and want a headshot with glasses, bring them. You can decide to wear glasses or without glasses during your session.

Simpler jewelry that distracts less from your eyes and fantastic expression is best.

Gentlemen

Clothing

For in-studio sessions that are an hour or longer, bring at least two suits or sports jackets. Simple without patterns is best. If your session is part of a corporate session, please only wear one outfit for the shoot.

Bring your best-fitting shirts with crisp collars and collar stays. We don’t want curled collars! Shirts with more structure are better than floppy shirts.

Bring a couple of complementary, simple ties, preferably without bold patterns.

Hair

Please take the time to style your hair before your shoot.

Take the time to style your hair nicely. Try not to get a haircut within three days of the headshot session. Hair takes time to settle.

If you must, bring every hair styling product and tool you use daily to style your hair.

Come freshly shaven and trimmed, including your nose hairs. Trim any crazy eyebrow hairs, but don't go nuts.

Other

If you wear glasses and want a headshot with glasses, bring them. You can decide to wear glasses or without glasses during your session.

Final words

positive Attitude

The majority of the people we photograph do not like getting their pictures taken. Your attitude matters, and if you’re having a rough day, it’ll show up on camera. So please show up with a winning attitude that makes you undeniable. Remember, your face represents the face of the company you work for.
